This teaching style is a merging of Forest Schools, Waldorf, Montessori, and Integrative Learning.
Outdoors - All Day! Interacting with nature! Working with Teammates!
Classes are held outdoors and also utilize places on the farm such as greenhouses, the Great Gatherings tipi,
and woodland self-built shelters.
Activities are based on the seasonal changes and weekly themes. You will explore
over 10 acres of woods, including several ponds, chickens, ducks, goats, and lots of insects, bugs and worms.
No computers or cell phones allowed. Bring your own sack lunch and we’ll provide an organic snack and drink.

Curiosity.....
is the driving force in the early years. Learning about the world and how to relate to it is the
child’s “job”. The memorable lessons are the “AH-HA” moments
when they figure things out on their own. They now own that idea forever.
The Mentor’s (teacher) job is to open the door and ask intriguing questions... questions that
dive deeper - require exploring. There are no tests or grades. Each student learns in their own way and at their own
pace. Some are readers, some need hands on. Some need social interaction and some thrive on independence.
Traditional schools break everything apart into separate subjects, as if we are not connected. DiscoverU recombines
the world and explores daily activities as a whole - guiding the mind, body and spirit to understand the parts and
wholeness of life.
For example.... The simple act of getting up in the morning opens up exploration
of time - history, living in the moment and future projection. What are dreams? Why are there 24 hours and 365 days?
Has it always been that way? Getting dressed: what do I choose to wear, fashion, weather, peer pressure, financial
factors or comfort? How are clothes made - by who, what are the raw materials, where do they come from?

Today we’re learning how to start a fire without a match. Then we’re going to learn how to plant seeds
and forage for a salad at lunch time. After lunch, under the parachute canopy in the woods, we’ll be analyzing
the soil and bugs. We will probably come home muddy. Yea!
